A general counsel is a corporate lawyer who gives legal advice to companies or government departments. General counselors have similar responsibilities as chief counselors or chief legal officers. Companies and government departments may hire a general counselor to manage the legal aspects of their company policies and procedures so that they follow any county, state, national and international laws that may apply. General counselors work to prevent, minimize and resolve conflicts with the law.
